MSC VENICE is a large Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) built in South Korea in 2016 for service within the global network of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Measuring 399 metres in length and 54 metres in beam, the vessel belongs to the first generation of approximately 400-metre containerships that marked the rapid increase in ship size during the 2010s.
Built by STX Offshore & Shipbuilding at Jinhae, South Korea, MSC VENICE was completed in early 2016 as yard number 1552. She has a gross tonnage of 176,490 GT, deadweight of 186,650 tonnes and a published container capacity of 15,908 TEU. The vessel has retained the MSC VENICE name throughout her career.

Construction and Design
MSC VENICE was constructed as part of a series of very large containerships built by STX Offshore & Shipbuilding for employment in MSC services. Her hull was launched in October 2015, with contemporary photographs documenting the vessel immediately after launching in South Korea. She entered service in 2016.
With an overall length of 399 metres, MSC VENICE is only one metre short of the symbolic 400-metre mark that became common among later generations of ULCVs. Her 54-metre beam allows approximately 20 container rows across the deck.
Her 15,908-TEU capacity and 176,490-GT volume placed the vessel among the largest containerships in the world at the time of her delivery. The Port of Hamburg also lists a draught of 15.5 metres, engine power of 53,250 kW and speed of approximately 23 knots.
Career with MSC
MSC VENICE has retained the same name throughout her commercial career and continues to operate within MSC's international container network.
Unlike many containerships that periodically change charterers and names, IMO 9647473 has remained readily identifiable as MSC VENICE since entering service. Current vessel records continue to show her under the Liberian flag, with MMSI 636017408 and call sign D5KU2.
She remains in service more than ten years after construction.
Piraeus Connection
MSC VENICE has a well-documented connection with Piraeus, particularly during the early part of her career.
The vessel was photographed at Perama on 30 April 2017, little more than a year after entering service. Two days later, on 2 May 2017, she was documented at Drapetsona Bay, Piraeus.
That same day provided an unusual scene outside Piraeus, when MSC VENICE, MSC FILLIPPA and MSC DIEGO were photographed together in the wider port area.
For PiraeuShips, this makes the recording especially valuable: MSC VENICE was documented while still a nearly new vessel and while ships approaching 400 metres in length were still a relatively recent development in world container shipping.
