CORFU SPIRIT – IMO 8611532

ex DORIEUS / OLYMPIADA / REGGIO / RAZZOLI / ANTONIO MACHADO / SUPERFLEX GOLF

CORFU SPIRIT is a Greek-flagged double-ended passenger and vehicle ferry built in the United Kingdom in 1989, today operated by Kerkyra Lines on services linking Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Paxos.

Originally completed as SUPERFLEX GOLF, the vessel has accumulated an unusually international career spanning Denmark, Spain, Italy, the Strait of Messina, Greece and the Black Sea.

She later carried the names ANTONIO MACHADO, RAZZOLI, REGGIO, DORIEUS and OLYMPIADA before returning to Greece and eventually becoming CORFU SPIRIT.

Following extensive refurbishment and repowering, the veteran ferry remains fully active in 2026, carrying up to 585 passengers and 160 vehicles.

Built as SUPERFLEX GOLF

The vessel was part of the unusual:

Superflex 2000

series.

These ferries were designed as simple, highly flexible double-ended Ro-Ro vessels that could operate without turning around inside a harbour.

SUPERFLEX GOLF was launched in Sunderland in:

January 1988

and delivered the following year.

Difficult Early Career

The ship's earliest years were commercially difficult.

She spent substantial periods laid up before eventually entering Danish ferry service.

During the early 1990s she was chartered on routes including:

Skagen – Marstrand

and:

Copenhagen – Landskrona.

Several of the companies associated with these services encountered financial difficulties, leading to repeated periods of inactivity.

Spain – ANTONIO MACHADO

In:

1994

the vessel was sold to Spanish interests and renamed:

ANTONIO MACHADO.

After conversion work at Málaga she entered service between:

Algeciras and Ceuta.

She later also operated:

Dénia – Ibiza.

Italy – RAZZOLI

After several years laid up in Spain, the ferry was acquired by Italian interests in:

2003

and renamed:

RAZZOLI.

She operated on routes around Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, including:

Milazzo – Vulcano – Lipari – Salina.

During this period she also underwent important rebuilding work.

REGGIO and the Strait of Messina

The vessel later entered service for:

Bluvia.

In:

2008

she was renamed:

REGGIO

and became associated with the:

Villa San Giovanni – Messina

crossing.

This high-frequency short-sea route was particularly suitable for the ship's double-ended configuration.

First Greek Chapter – DORIEUS

In:

2012

the ferry was sold to Greek interests.

She became:

DORIEUS

and entered service between:

Corfu and Igoumenitsa.

This marked the beginning of her long association with the Ionian Sea.

OLYMPIADA and the Black Sea

In:

2014

the ship changed hands again.

She was renamed:

OLYMPIADA

and deployed in the:

Kerch Strait

between Crimea and mainland Russia.

The vessel remained in this Black Sea chapter until:

2019.

Return to Greece as DORIEUS

In:

2019

the ship returned to Greece.

She once again adopted the name:

DORIEUS.

This was a rare case of a ferry returning to one of its previous identities after several years abroad.

Kerkyra Lines

Kerkyra Lines states that DORIEUS joined its operation in:

2021.

The vessel underwent a:

complete conversion and renovation

before being reintroduced to passengers under a new identity.

DORIEUS → CORFU SPIRIT

In:

2022

the vessel became:

CORFU SPIRIT.

The full modern name history is therefore:

SUPERFLEX GOLF → ANTONIO MACHADO → RAZZOLI → REGGIO → DORIEUS → OLYMPIADA → DORIEUS → CORFU SPIRIT.

New Caterpillar Machinery

Specialist ferry records indicate that the vessel received:

4 × Caterpillar main engines

in connection with her 2022 configuration.

Earlier phases of her career had used different Cummins and IVECO machinery.

The repeated engine changes reflect the considerable degree to which the ferry has been rebuilt during more than three decades of operation.

585 Passengers and 160 Vehicles

Kerkyra Lines currently publishes:

585 passengers

and:

160 vehicles.

Official company dimensions are:

93.83 m length

and:

15.00 m beam.

This is preferable to the alternative 95-metre figure sometimes found in international ferry databases.

Current Ionian Services

CORFU SPIRIT remains an active member of the:

Kerkyra Lines fleet.

Her current operations include services involving:

Corfu

Igoumenitsa

and:

Paxos.

The normal Corfu–Igoumenitsa crossing is published at approximately:

1 hour 30 minutes.

PiraeuShips in 2026

PiraeuShips published the dedicated:

CORFU SPIRIT – IMO 8611532

entry in:

July 2026.

The original article already captured many of the vessel's historical identities and its current Kerkyra Lines role.

The expanded version adds the full international history and explains how a ferry built for Scandinavian service almost four decades ago became a regular Ionian Sea vessel.

Still Active at 37 Years Old

CORFU SPIRIT remains fully operational in:

2026,

approximately:

37 years after delivery.

Her continued service is particularly notable given the ship's complex sequence of:

conversions,

engine changes,

owners,

flags,

and trading regions.

PiraeuShips Record

CORFU SPIRIT was recorded by PiraeuShips during the latest Greek chapter of an unusually international double-ended ferry career. Built by North East Shipbuilders at Sunderland and delivered in 1989 as SUPERFLEX GOLF, the vessel subsequently operated in Denmark, Spain and Italy as ANTONIO MACHADO, RAZZOLI and REGGIO before first arriving in Greece as DORIEUS in 2012. A five-year Black Sea period followed under the OLYMPIADA identity before she returned to Greece, rejoined Ionian Sea service and ultimately became CORFU SPIRIT. Extensively refurbished and now powered by Caterpillar machinery, the vessel carries up to 585 passengers and 160 vehicles for Kerkyra Lines. Still fully active in 2026, CORFU SPIRIT represents one of the longest and most varied careers among the ferries currently operating around Corfu.

OKIALOS – IMO 9989601

Modern Greek-Built Double-Ended Ferry – Piraeus–Aegina Service

OKIALOS is a modern Greek double-ended passenger and vehicle ferry completed in 2025 at Kouris Shipyard in Amaliapolis, Magnesia, and today operated by Greek interests on the busy Piraeus–Aegina connection.

At around 100 metres in registered length, 18 metres in beam and 1,848 GT, she belongs to the latest generation of large Greek double-ended ferries designed specifically for short-sea island services.

Unlike conventional ferries, OKIALOS can embark and disembark vehicles from either end of the vessel, allowing her to enter and leave port without turning around. This is particularly valuable on high-frequency routes such as Piraeus–Aegina, where rapid turnaround time is a major operational advantage.

The ferry was launched at Amaliapolis on 29 January 2025 and entered commercial service later that year.

She remains fully active in 2026, operating repeatedly between Piraeus and Aegina.

Vessel Details

Name: OKIALOS

IMO: 9989601

MMSI: 240671400

Call Sign: SVCX4

Type: Double-Ended Passenger / Ro-Ro Ferry

Flag: Greece

Built: 2025

Builder: Kouris Shipyard, Amaliapolis, Magnesia, Greece

Owner: Remezzo Maritime Co. / Ρεμέτζο Ναυτική Εταιρεία

Manager: Remezzo Maritime Co.

Gross Tonnage: 1,848 GT

Deadweight: 718 t

Registered Length Overall: 100.00 m

AIS / Specialist Length Figure: approximately 96–100 m depending on register

Beam: 18.00 m

Current Status: Active

Current Principal Service: Piraeus – Aegina.

Built in Greece

One of the most important features of OKIALOS is that she is:

Greek built.

Construction took place at:

Kouris Shipyard

at:

Amaliapolis, Magnesia.

The ship was launched on:

29 January 2025.

The vessel is therefore part of the continuing Greek tradition of building large double-ended ferries specifically for domestic short-sea operations.

Kouris – Not Kouzis

The old short description should be corrected here.

The vessel is frequently associated online with a transliteration resembling “Kouzis”, but contemporary launch documentation identifies the yard as:

Kouris Shipyard – Ναυπηγεία Κουρή

at Amaliapolis.

For the updated PiraeuShips profile, I would therefore use:

Builder: Kouris Shipyard, Amaliapolis, Magnesia, Greece.

Double-Ended Design

OKIALOS belongs to the familiar Greek:

double-ended ferry

concept.

The ship has symmetrical operational ends so that she can travel in either direction without the time-consuming manoeuvre of turning inside a harbour.

This arrangement is particularly suited to:

short crossings,

high-frequency services,

restricted ports,

and routes with large daily vehicle movements.

1,848 GT

Current registry databases give:

1,848 GT

and:

718 tonnes deadweight.

The original PiraeuShips figure of 1,848 GT therefore remains correct.

100 or 96 Metres?

There is a small length discrepancy in current databases.

VesselFinder gives:

100.00 m LOA,

while Maritime Optima currently displays:

96 m.

Because the principal registry-style source gives 100 metres and the vessel is widely described as approximately 100 metres long, I would retain:

Length overall: approximately 100 m.

Greek Flag

OKIALOS sails under the:

Greek flag.

Current radio identification is:

MMSI 240671400

and:

Call Sign SVCX4.

Remezzo Maritime

The original PiraeuShips record identifies:

Remezzo Maritime Co.

as both:

owner

and:

manager.

The ship represents a major modern investment in domestic Greek ferry tonnage.

Piraeus–Aegina

By 2026, OKIALOS had become closely associated with:

Piraeus–Aegina.

Recent AIS histories repeatedly show alternating calls at:

Piraeus

and:

Aegina.

This kind of operation is exactly what the double-ended design was intended for.

Fast Port Turnarounds

On a short route such as Piraeus–Aegina, overall commercial performance is not determined only by sea speed.

The ability to:

arrive,

lower the ramp,

discharge vehicles,

load the next traffic,

and depart again without turning

can save substantial time over multiple daily rotations.

This is one reason modern double-ended ferries have become so important in Greek short-sea transportation.

PiraeuShips in 2026

PiraeuShips published:

OKIALOS – IMO 9989601

in:

March 2026.

The original entry recorded:

2025 build

approximately 100 m length

18 m beam

1,848 GT

and:

Remezzo Maritime ownership and management.

The expanded profile adds the vessel's launch history, correct shipyard identification and present Piraeus–Aegina role.

Still Active in 2026

OKIALOS remains fully operational.

Current AIS information continues to show the vessel:

under way in the Aegean

with recent departures from:

Piraeus.

The vessel is therefore not simply a recent newbuilding preserved in the archive but an active part of today's Piraeus ferry traffic.

PiraeuShips Record

OKIALOS was recorded by PiraeuShips during the first full operating period of one of the newest large double-ended ferries built in Greece. Constructed at Kouris Shipyard in Amaliapolis, Magnesia, and launched on 29 January 2025, the approximately 100-metre vessel combines 1,848 GT with the operational flexibility of a double-ended Ro-Pax design. Owned and managed by Remezzo Maritime, OKIALOS entered the high-frequency Piraeus–Aegina market, where the ability to load, discharge and depart without turning is particularly valuable. Still fully active in 2026, the ferry represents the continuing development of Greek-built short-sea passenger shipping and gives the PiraeuShips archive a record of a vessel essentially from the beginning of her commercial career.

Kotaix - IMO 9825996

KOTAIX is a Chilean double-ended passenger and vehicle ferry with a strong connection to Piraeus and the Salamis ferry route. Built in Greece in 2017, she originally entered service as THEOCHARIS MARIA L for Karnesis–Lalousis NE and operated on the busy Perama–Paloukia, Salamis crossing. The vessel was registered in Piraeus and became a familiar sight in the western part of the port before being sold abroad in 2021.

The ferry was designed as a large double-ended Ro-Ro unit, allowing vehicles to embark and disembark from either end without the need for the vessel to turn around. Naval architects Petychaki list her at 92.68 metres in length, 17.56 metres in breadth, with a draught of 2.90 metres and capacity for around 164 cars on the main vehicle deck.

In 2021, THEOCHARIS MARIA L was sold for service in South America and renamed KOTAIX. During her delivery voyage from Greece, the ferry called at Santa Cruz de Tenerife after sailing from Piraeus, before continuing towards the Americas. She initially sailed under the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and later transferred to the Chilean flag.

Gross Tonnage: 1,512 GT
Deadweight: 920 t in current Chilean registry data
Original Greek design DWT: 1,964 t
Vehicle Capacity: approx. 164 cars
Current Area of Operation: Southern Chile

History

The vessel entered service at the end of 2017 as THEOCHARIS MARIA L. She was built for Karnesis–Lalousis NE and deployed on the short but extremely intensive Perama–Salamis crossing. Her sister ship was IOANNIS SOPHIA K, built a year earlier. Contemporary records show THEOCHARIS MARIA L operating between Perama and Paloukia from her first months in service and regularly undergoing maintenance in the shipyards around Salamis and Perama.

Following her sale in 2021, the vessel became KOTAIX and left Piraeus for South America. By the end of 2022, Chile’s official merchant-fleet register listed KOTAIX under Inversiones Santa Bertina S.A., with 1,512 GT, 920 dwt and dimensions of approximately 93 × 17.5 metres.

Current AIS records in 2026 show KOTAIX continuing to operate in southern Chile, particularly in the Hornopirén–Leptepu area, where double-ended ferries are well suited to short coastal routes requiring frequent vehicle loading and rapid turnaround.

Piraeus Connection

The ship’s connection with Piraeus is much stronger than that of a typical foreign ferry. Before becoming KOTAIX, she spent her entire early career in the wider Piraeus–Salamis area as THEOCHARIS MARIA L. Photographic records confirm her at Perama and Piraeus repeatedly between 2017 and 2019, including regular crossings to Paloukia.

PiraeuShips Record

KOTAIX was recorded by PiraeuShips during her Greek career as well as around the time of her transformation from THEOCHARIS MARIA L to KOTAIX. Her presence in the archive is particularly interesting because she represents a modern Greek-built double-ended ferry that began life on the Perama–Salamis route before being exported to Chile, where she remains in active service today.

THASSOS II is a Greek-built double-ended passenger and vehicle ferry completed in 2011, originally entering service under the name FILOTHEOS.

Constructed at Theodoropoulos General Marine Repairs at Ampelakia, Salamis, the ferry was initially employed on the busy Paloukia–Perama crossing before being sold in 2012 and transferred to northern Greece.

Renamed THASSOS II, she subsequently became closely associated with ANETH – the Thassos Shipping Company and the intensive ferry service between Keramoti and Thassos.

Fifteen years after construction, she remains one of the principal double-ended ferries serving the island in 2026.

Current Status: Active

Built at Ampelakia

The vessel was constructed entirely in Greece at:

Theodoropoulos General Marine Repairs – Ampelakia, Salamis

and completed during the summer of 2011.

Her launching took place on:

16 July 2011.

The ship was designed as a large double-ended ferry specifically suited to short, intensive crossings where rapid loading and unloading are essential.

Double-Ended Design

Unlike a conventional ferry, THASSOS II does not need to perform a complete turning manoeuvre every time she enters or leaves port.

Vehicle ramps are located at both ends, while the propulsion and manoeuvring arrangement allows the vessel to operate effectively in either direction.

This configuration is particularly advantageous on short shuttle routes.

It reduces:

port turnaround time

manoeuvring time

and unnecessary movement inside confined harbour areas.

Four Guascor Main Engines

The original builder's specification lists:

4 × Guascor main engines

each producing approximately:

785 hp at 1,800 rpm

giving a combined output of approximately:

3,140 hp.

The vessel was also designed with four propulsion units capable of producing the manoeuvring power required for double-ended operation.

Builder specifications quote:

Service speed: 13 knots

Maximum speed: 14.5 knots.

Vehicle Capacity

The original arrangement provided:

168 car spaces on the main garage deck

plus:

44 additional spaces on the lower garage

giving a total nominal capacity of:

212 cars.

The original passenger certificate quoted by the builder was for:

500 passengers.

Later ferry databases sometimes quote higher passenger figures following subsequent certification or modifications, but the 500-passenger and 212-car figures are the original yard specification.

FILOTHEOS

The ferry entered service under the name:

FILOTHEOS

and initially worked on the extremely busy:

Paloukia – Perama

crossing.

This route between Salamis and the Piraeus mainland is one of Greece's most intensive short-sea ferry operations and is ideally suited to large double-ended vessels.

FILOTHEOS operated there from 2011 until the first half of 2012.

Sold to Thassos

In July 2012, the ferry was sold and left the Salamis–Perama service.

She was transferred to northern Greece and renamed:

THASSOS II

The verified identity history is therefore straightforward:

FILOTHEOS → THASSOS II

The name reflected her new long-term area of operation.

Keramoti – Thassos

THASSOS II became associated with the short crossing between:

Keramoti

and

Limenas, Thassos.

This route is one of Greece's busiest island ferry links.

Its short distance and high traffic volume require vessels capable of:

frequent departures

rapid port turnarounds

large vehicle intake

and reliable year-round operation.

The double-ended configuration of THASSOS II is particularly well suited to precisely this type of service.

ANETH

The ferry now operates with ANETH, the long-established Thassos shipping company.

ANETH was founded in 1974 by shareholders from Thassos with the objective of maintaining dependable ferry links between the island and mainland Greece.

The company's current fleet includes:

THASSOS I

THASSOS II

THASSOS III

and

AGIOS PANTELEIMON

together with vessels operating through cooperating companies.

Still Active in 2026

THASSOS II remains heavily employed in 2026.

September AIS records continue to show the ferry repeatedly crossing between:

Thassos and Keramoti

often performing numerous voyages each day.

The vessel also underwent scheduled maintenance during April 2026, including a visit to the Piraeus ship-repair area and the Vasileiadis drydock.

Piraeus Connection

THASSOS II has several connections with the wider Piraeus maritime area.

She was:

built at Ampelakia, Salamis

originally operated between:

Paloukia and Perama

and has periodically returned to Piraeus for maintenance and drydocking.

The vessel was documented at Piraeus in January and February 2019, during one such maintenance period.

PiraeuShips published its dedicated THASSOS II entry in February 2019.

PiraeuShips Record

THASSOS II was recorded at Piraeus by PiraeuShips in 2019 during a return to the maritime area where her career had begun. Built at Theodoropoulos General Marine Repairs at Ampelakia, Salamis, in 2011, the double-ended ferry originally entered service as FILOTHEOS on the Paloukia–Perama crossing. Sold in July 2012 and renamed THASSOS II, she moved to northern Greece and became closely associated with ANETH and the intensive Keramoti–Thassos service. Still operating this route in 2026, the Greek-built ferry remains a good example of the large double-ended vessels developed specifically for the country's high-frequency short-distance ferry links.
