SACHSEN – F219
Lead Ship of the German Navy's F124 Sachsen-Class Air-Defence Frigates
SACHSEN (F219) is the lead vessel of the German Navy's powerful Type F124 Sachsen-class air-defence frigates, designed primarily to protect naval formations against aircraft, missiles and other airborne threats.
Built by Blohm + Voss at Hamburg, the frigate was launched in 2001 and formally commissioned on 4 November 2004.
At 143 metres long and approximately 5,800 tonnes displacement, SACHSEN combines the long-range SMART-L surveillance radar with the advanced APAR multifunction radar, a 32-cell Mk 41 vertical-launch system, SM-2 and ESSM surface-to-air missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and substantial anti-submarine capability.
More than twenty years after entering service, she remains one of the German Navy's principal air-defence warships.
In 2026, SACHSEN became particularly prominent again when she deployed as flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 – SNMG1 for operations and exercises on NATO's northern flank.

Built at Hamburg
SACHSEN was constructed by:
Blohm + Voss
at Hamburg.
Her keel was laid on:
1 February 1999,
followed by launching on:
20 January 2001.
She was formally delivered in 2002 before entering full German Navy service in:
2004.
The ship became the first of three F124 frigates.
Her sister ships are:
HAMBURG – F220
and:
HESSEN – F221.
Designed for Air Defence
The Sachsen class was created primarily for:
fleet air defence.
The German Navy describes these ships as multi-purpose frigates, but their sensor and weapons architecture is heavily optimised to detect and engage airborne threats at long range.
A single F124 can provide air-surveillance coverage over an extremely large area.
SMART-L
The ship's principal long-range surveillance sensor is:
SMART-L.
According to the Bundeswehr, this radar has a range exceeding:
400 kilometres
and can process more than:
1,000 targets simultaneously.
This allows SACHSEN not only to protect herself but also to contribute air-surveillance data to an entire multinational naval force.
APAR
The second central sensor is:
APAR – Active Phased Array Radar.
Unlike conventional rotating radars, APAR uses four fixed electronically scanned antenna faces.
The system is capable of:
search,
tracking,
fire control,
and missile guidance.
This combination of SMART-L and APAR was one of the most advanced European naval air-defence architectures when the class entered service.
Mk 41 Vertical Launch System
SACHSEN carries a:
32-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launch System.
The launcher can employ:
SM-2
and:
ESSM – Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile.
One Mk 41 cell can hold:
one SM-2,
or multiple ESSM depending on configuration.
This provides layered defence against:
aircraft,
anti-ship missiles,
drones,
and other airborne threats.
RAM Close-In Defence
For shorter-range air defence, SACHSEN carries:
two RIM-116 RAM launchers.
One is positioned forward and the other above the hangar.
These provide a final defensive layer against incoming missiles and aircraft.
Harpoon
For surface warfare the frigate carries:
RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
These allow SACHSEN to engage hostile surface vessels at long range in addition to her primary air-defence mission.
76 mm Gun
The ship's forward gun is a:
76 mm Compact
weapon.
It can engage:
surface vessels,
air targets,
and shore positions.
SACHSEN also carries smaller 27 mm guns and heavy machine guns for close-range defence.
Anti-Submarine Capability
The frigate is not restricted to air warfare.
SACHSEN carries:
DSQS-series hull sonar
and:
MU90 lightweight torpedoes.
Embarked helicopters significantly extend her anti-submarine search and engagement range.
Command Ship Capability
The F124 class also possesses extensive:
command
and:
communications
facilities.
This makes the vessels suitable for directing multinational naval formations.
SACHSEN has repeatedly demonstrated this role during NATO deployments.
NATO Operations
The class has long operated closely with NATO and U.S. naval forces.
German F124 frigates have integrated with:
U.S. Navy carrier strike groups
and participated in major alliance exercises in the:
North Atlantic,
Mediterranean,
Baltic,
and Arctic regions.
SACHSEN as SNMG1 Flagship – 2026
The most important current update concerns:
2026.
On:
10 April 2026
SACHSEN deployed as flagship of:
Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 – SNMG1.
The German Navy sent the frigate toward northern Norway and the High North to train alliance defence under Arctic conditions.
The Bundeswehr specifically highlighted the vessel's:
powerful sensors,
command capability,
and suitability for protecting NATO's northern flank.
This provides direct official confirmation that SACHSEN remains a frontline operational warship.
PiraeuShips in 2017
PiraeuShips published the dedicated:
SACHSEN – F219
entry in:
January 2017.
The original profile already recorded:
143 m length
5,800 t displacement
29-knot speed
and the ship's extensive missile and sensor systems.
The modern update adds the vessel's continuing NATO role and provides current Bundeswehr technical data.
PiraeuShips Record
SACHSEN (F219) was recorded by PiraeuShips during the continuing career of the lead ship of Germany's Type F124 air-defence frigates. Built by Blohm + Voss at Hamburg, launched in January 2001 and commissioned on 4 November 2004, the 143-metre warship combines the long-range SMART-L surveillance radar and APAR multifunction radar with a 32-cell Mk 41 vertical-launch system for SM-2 and ESSM missiles. Harpoon anti-ship missiles, RAM close-in defence, MU90 torpedoes and embarked helicopters provide additional multi-purpose capability. More than two decades after commissioning, SACHSEN remains at the forefront of German and NATO naval operations: in April 2026 she deployed as flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 for alliance-defence training in the High North. The PiraeuShips footage therefore documents a warship that continues to perform a frontline NATO command and air-defence role many years after the original recording.
