As Ambience
As Pacific Dawn
AMBIENCE is a classic Fincantieri-built cruise ship completed in 1991, whose long career has included service with Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises Australia and, since 2022, Ambassador Cruise Line.
Originally delivered as REGAL PRINCESS, the ship became one of the distinctive early vessels of the Princess Cruises fleet before transferring to Australia in 2007 as PACIFIC DAWN.
Her career almost ended during the COVID-19 pandemic. After a planned transfer to Cruise & Maritime Voyages collapsed, the vessel was sold and renamed SATOSHI for an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful project to turn her into a floating residential community.
Rescued from possible demolition, the ship was acquired for the newly established Ambassador Cruise Line and extensively refurbished before beginning yet another commercial career as AMBIENCE in 2022.
More than 35 years after launching, she remains fully active in 2026.

Built as REGAL PRINCESS
The vessel was constructed at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard as yard number:
5840.
She was launched in March 1990 and formally delivered in July 1991.
The ship entered service as:
REGAL PRINCESS
and represented an important generation in the development of modern Princess Cruises.
Her distinctive profile and large forward superstructure made REGAL PRINCESS immediately recognisable.
Princess Cruises
REGAL PRINCESS operated for Princess Cruises from:
1991 until 2007.
During her sixteen years with the company she sailed a wide variety of international itineraries.
Her deployments included:
Alaska
Caribbean
Europe
Mediterranean
and longer international voyages.
Although considerably smaller than today's largest cruise vessels, a ship of almost 70,000 GT was substantial when she entered service in the early 1990s.
REGAL PRINCESS → PACIFIC DAWN
A major change occurred in 2007.
The vessel transferred from Princess Cruises to:
P&O Cruises Australia
and underwent refurbishment before becoming:
PACIFIC DAWN.
The ship was formally named in her new Australian identity in November 2007, with Olympic champion Cathy Freeman serving as godmother.
Australia
PACIFIC DAWN subsequently became closely associated with the Australian cruise market.
For approximately thirteen years she operated cruises from Australian home ports toward destinations including:
South Pacific islands
New Zealand
and Australian coastal destinations.
For a generation of Australian cruise passengers, PACIFIC DAWN became one of P&O Australia's most familiar ships.
Planned Retirement in 2020
By 2020 the vessel was approaching thirty years of age.
P&O Cruises Australia planned to withdraw PACIFIC DAWN from its fleet and sell her to:
Cruise & Maritime Voyages – CMV.
CMV announced plans to rename the ship:
AMY JOHNSON.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic devastated the cruise industry and CMV entered administration before the transfer could be completed.
The ship therefore never entered commercial service as AMY JOHNSON.
PACIFIC DAWN → SATOSHI
Instead, the vessel was sold during late 2020 to:
Ocean Builders.
She was renamed:
SATOSHI.
The new owners had a highly unusual plan.
Rather than operating as a conventional cruise ship, SATOSHI was intended to become a:
floating residential and entrepreneurial community
off Panama.
Cabins were to be sold or rented as private residences, with the project marketed partly toward the cryptocurrency community.
The Satoshi Project Fails
The project attracted considerable international attention but encountered major practical difficulties.
One of the most serious problems was obtaining suitable marine insurance for a permanently occupied former cruise ship operating outside the conventional cruise model.
The plan was eventually abandoned.
For a time, SATOSHI appeared to be heading toward demolition.
A Remarkable Rescue
Instead of being scrapped, the vessel received another opportunity.
She was acquired for a newly established British cruise company:
Ambassador Cruise Line.
The former SATOSHI travelled to Europe and underwent an extensive refurbishment and technical upgrade.
SATOSHI → AMBIENCE
The ship was renamed:
AMBIENCE.
The full identity history is therefore:
REGAL PRINCESS → PACIFIC DAWN → SATOSHI → AMBIENCE
with AMY JOHNSON remaining only a planned identity that was never used in commercial operation.
Ambassador Cruise Line
AMBIENCE became the first ship and flagship of:
Ambassador Cruise Line.
She entered service for the company in:
2022.
The operator developed a programme centred largely on traditional British cruising with departures from regional UK ports and a strong emphasis on no-fly cruises.
Current Configuration
Following refurbishment, Ambassador currently publishes:
70,285 GT
245 m length
789 cabins
and capacity for approximately:
1,400 guests.
The ship now offers restaurants, bars, lounges, entertainment venues, wellness facilities and a variety of cabin categories ranging from inside accommodation to balcony cabins and suites.
Still Active in 2026
AMBIENCE remains fully active in 2026.
She continues operating Ambassador cruises from Britain toward:
Northern Europe
Norwegian fjords
Mediterranean
Atlantic islands
and longer international itineraries.
September 2026 AIS data continued to show the vessel actively cruising in northern European waters.
The fact that the former REGAL PRINCESS remains in frontline passenger service 35 years after delivery is increasingly notable.
Piraeus Connection
The vessel has an especially interesting connection with PiraeuShips because the archive documents more than one identity of the same ship.
The original PiraeuShips entry was created during the vessel's PACIFIC DAWN / SATOSHI transition period in 2020.
The page has subsequently also been updated with footage showing her later identity as:
AMBIENCE.
PiraeuShips therefore provides a rare visual record of the same IMO-numbered vessel in two very different chapters of her career.
PiraeuShips Record
The vessel now known as AMBIENCE was documented by PiraeuShips across more than one chapter of an extraordinary cruise career. Built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone in 1991 as REGAL PRINCESS, she spent sixteen years with Princess Cruises before becoming PACIFIC DAWN for P&O Cruises Australia in 2007. Following the collapse of plans to transfer her to Cruise & Maritime Voyages in 2020, the ship was renamed SATOSHI for an unsuccessful floating-community project in Panama. Rescued from possible demolition, she was extensively refurbished and entered service in 2022 as AMBIENCE, flagship of Ambassador Cruise Line. Still fully active in 2026 at more than 35 years of age, she is a remarkable survivor from an earlier generation of large cruise ships, while the PiraeuShips archive documents the same vessel under different identities during her continuing career.
