World Explorer - IMO 9835719

WORLD EXPLORER is a Portuguese-built polar expedition cruise ship completed in 2019 for Mystic Cruises and the first vessel of the modern expedition series developed at West Sea shipyard in Viana do Castelo.

Designed for both polar exploration and small-ship luxury cruising, the 126-metre vessel spent much of her first career operating for Mystic-related brands and under charter to Quark Expeditions.

Her WORLD EXPLORER chapter is now coming to an end.

After completing her final Quark Expeditions season, the vessel returned to the same West Sea shipyard where she was originally built and is undergoing a major conversion for Windstar Cruises.

She is scheduled to enter service on 28 December 2026 under a new name:

STAR EXPLORER.

Built in Portugal

WORLD EXPLORER was an important ship for the Portuguese shipbuilding industry.

She became the first modern polar expedition cruise vessel constructed at:

West Sea in Viana do Castelo.

The vessel was ordered for:

Mystic Cruises

and became the first of a family of expedition ships subsequently built at the Portuguese yard.

First of a New Generation

The West Sea expedition series eventually developed into vessels associated with:

Mystic Cruises

Atlas Ocean Voyages

and other operators.

WORLD EXPLORER established the basic concept:

compact dimensions,

high-end passenger accommodation,

ice-strengthened construction,

Zodiac expedition capability,

and the ability to operate equally well in polar regions and conventional European cruise destinations.

Commissioned in 2019

WORLD EXPLORER was formally commissioned during a ceremony on:

6 April 2019.

Former French First Lady and singer:

Carla Bruni

served as godmother.

Commercial service began later in the summer of 2019.

Mystic Cruises

WORLD EXPLORER was the first ocean-going cruise ship introduced directly by Mystic Cruises.

Her early programmes included cruises for Mystic's European brands, particularly in:

Northern Europe.

However, expedition charter employment rapidly became an important part of her career.

Quark Expeditions

The vessel became closely associated with:

Quark Expeditions.

Under Quark she undertook polar voyages to destinations including:

Antarctica

South Georgia

Arctic regions

and other remote areas.

Her ice-strengthened construction, low passenger capacity and expedition equipment were particularly well suited to this market.

Polar Capability

WORLD EXPLORER was built with:

Ice Class 1B

and specialised expedition capabilities.

Her relatively shallow draught and 126-metre length allow access to destinations that would be impossible for mainstream cruise ships.

Zodiac operations and specialised expedition teams formed an important part of her Quark career.

PiraeuShips in 2020

PiraeuShips documented WORLD EXPLORER during:

2020.

The dedicated page:

WORLD EXPLORER – IMO 9835719

was published in November of that year.

This recording has subsequently become considerably more historically significant because the vessel's original WORLD EXPLORER identity is now reaching its end.

Sold to Windstar

In April 2024, Windstar Cruises announced an agreement to acquire two ships from Mystic Invest.

One was a newbuild that became:

STAR SEEKER.

The second was:

WORLD EXPLORER.

Windstar planned a major reconstruction rather than simply operating the vessel unchanged.

Final Quark Season

WORLD EXPLORER completed her final season for:

Quark Expeditions

during 2026.

After concluding her charter commitment, she returned to:

Viana do Castelo.

The ship arrived at West Sea in April 2026 to begin conversion.

Becoming STAR EXPLORER

The conversion involves major modifications to both passenger and expedition areas.

Changes include:

new suites,

new restaurants,

redesigned public spaces,

removal or modification of expedition-focused areas,

and installation of Windstar's own signature features.

The vessel will become:

STAR EXPLORER.

224 Guests

After conversion, Windstar plans to accommodate:

224 guests

in:

112 all-suite accommodations.

This is a significant change from the approximately 172–200 passengers associated with the ship's expedition configuration.

First Voyage – 28 December 2026

STAR EXPLORER is scheduled to enter Windstar service on:

28 December 2026.

Her first programme will focus on the:

Mediterranean

before expanding toward Northern Europe and other regions.

The vessel's compact dimensions will remain a major advantage, allowing access to smaller ports even after the expedition equipment is removed.

PiraeuShips Record

WORLD EXPLORER was recorded by PiraeuShips in 2020 during the first years of the vessel's expedition-cruise career. Built at West Sea in Viana do Castelo in 2019 as the first ocean-going cruise ship for Mystic Cruises, the 126-metre vessel subsequently became closely associated with Quark Expeditions and polar cruising. Following the completion of her final Quark season in 2026, WORLD EXPLORER returned to the Portuguese shipyard where she was built for a major conversion into Windstar Cruises' STAR EXPLORER. Scheduled to enter her completely new career on 28 December 2026 with accommodation for 224 guests, the vessel is now undergoing one of the most significant transformations in the modern PiraeuShips archive. The 2020 footage therefore preserves her original WORLD EXPLORER identity before the start of an entirely different luxury-cruise chapter.
