IRENES RAINBOW – IMO 9303780
IRENES RAINBOW, today sailing as CMA CGM NAVEGANTES, is a South Korean-built containership completed in 2006 at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan. The vessel spent most of her career under Greek ownership connected with the Tsakos Group and became a familiar caller at Piraeus before being sold to CMA CGM in 2022. With a capacity of approximately 2,824 TEU, she belongs to the sub-Panamax generation of containerships that played an important role in Mediterranean and regional liner trades before the arrival of today’s much larger vessels.
The ship measures approximately 222 metres in length and 30 metres in beam, with a gross tonnage of 28,592 GT and deadweight of 39,382 tonnes. Her propulsion is provided by a MAN-B&W main engine developing around 28,000 kW. During her IRENES RAINBOW period she was classed by Bureau Veritas and managed by Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement.
A major change in the vessel’s career occurred in 2022, when CMA CGM purchased IRENES RAINBOW from the Tsakos Group for a reported US$45 million. Broker reports described her as a 2,824-TEU, 2006-built gearless containership, with delivery scheduled for August 2022. She was subsequently renamed CMA CGM NAVEGANTES and transferred to the Maltese flag.

History
The vessel entered service in April 2006 as IRENES RAINBOW under Greek ownership. In June 2008 she was renamed KOTA SEGAR, an identity she retained until June 2010. She then reverted to IRENES RAINBOW, remaining under that name for approximately twelve more years.
During this period, she was associated with Tsakos Columbia Shipmanagement and operated on a variety of international container services. Charter records show the ship trading for liner operators including UASC, Messina and Hapag-Lloyd at different stages of her career.
In 2022, CMA CGM acquired the vessel from the Tsakos Group. The sale was widely reported at around $45 million, reflecting the unusually strong second-hand containership market of that period. By August 2022, the vessel had become CMA CGM NAVEGANTES.
Piraeus Connection
IRENES RAINBOW had a well-documented connection with Piraeus during her Tsakos period. She was photographed at the PCT terminal at Ikonio on 7 March 2021 and again in the Piraeus Roads on 12 August 2021, shortly before the final year of her career under the IRENES RAINBOW name.
PiraeuShips Record
IRENES RAINBOW was recorded at Piraeus by PiraeuShips while the vessel was still operating under Tsakos interests. The recording now has additional historical significance because the ship was sold to CMA CGM in 2022 and renamed CMA CGM NAVEGANTES. It preserves the vessel during an important Greek-owned period of her career before the change of owner, name, flag and identity.
