ASTRID SCHULTE, today sailing as WAN HAI 722, is a large post-Panamax containership built in South Korea in 2009. The vessel was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and originally entered service as APL ILLINOIS, before reverting to the ASTRID SCHULTE name in 2014. She retained that identity until 2021, when she was sold to Taiwanese interests and renamed WAN HAI 722.
The ship measures approximately 304 metres in length and 40 metres in beam, with a gross tonnage of 75,582 GT and current deadweight of about 90,443 tonnes. She belongs to Hyundai’s large 6,500–7,200 TEU containership generation and has a nominal capacity of around 7,241 TEU, including roughly 760 reefer connections. Propulsion is provided by a MAN-B&W 10K98MC-C main engine rated at about 60,200 kW, with a historical service speed of approximately 23 knots.
The vessel also has a documented connection with Piraeus. ASTRID SCHULTE was photographed at Perama, Piraeus, on 7 June 2019, during the period when she was still trading under the Maltese flag and Schulte-related management.

History
The vessel was delivered in 2009 as APL ILLINOIS and initially operated under APL charter while managed within the Schulte group. In 2014 she reverted to the name ASTRID SCHULTE, under which she traded for another seven years.
In late 2020, ASTRID SCHULTE and sister ship ADRIAN SCHULTE were reported sold en bloc by Schulte interests to Taiwanese buyers for a combined US$70 million, equivalent to about US$35 million each. In May 2021, ASTRID SCHULTE became WAN HAI 722, transferred to the Singapore flag and entered service with Wan Hai Lines.
Current Status
WAN HAI 722 remains active in 2026. Current AIS data shows her operating on long-haul container services between Asia and the west coast of the Americas, still carrying the same IMO number 9398230.
Piraeus Connection
ASTRID SCHULTE had a clear Piraeus link during her Schulte period. She was documented at Perama on 7 June 2019, and she is already present in the PiraeuShips archive from her earlier career under that identity.

ASTRID SCHULTE was recorded in the Piraeus area by PiraeuShips during her period under Schulte management and the Maltese flag. The recording now has additional historical value, as IMO 9398230 was sold to Wan Hai Lines and renamed WAN HAI 722 in 2021. It preserves the vessel during a distinct stage of her career before a major change of owner, flag and identity.
