AIGAION PELAGOS – IMO 9477012
ex VALIANT / SEA VALIANT
AIGAION PELAGOS is a powerful Greek-flagged Anchor Handling Tug Supply and salvage vessel, built in Poland in 2010 and today operated by MEGATUGS Salvage & Towage from Piraeus.
Originally delivered as SEA VALIANT for GulfMark Offshore, the 70-metre vessel was designed for demanding offshore work including anchor handling, towing, offshore supply, firefighting and emergency response.
After being acquired by Greek interests in 2021, she initially carried the shortened name VALIANT before becoming AIGAION PELAGOS in 2022.
With a bollard pull of 120 tonnes, DP2 capability, FiFi 1 and extensive towing and offshore equipment, AIGAION PELAGOS is one of the most powerful salvage and emergency-response tugs operating under the Greek flag.

Built as SEA VALIANT
The vessel was completed in 2010 as:
SEA VALIANT
for offshore operator GulfMark.
She was the twenty-second vessel in a series of 23 ocean-going Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessels designed by Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting.
The series was developed for a wide range of offshore assignments including:
towing offshore platforms
anchor handling
offshore supply
firefighting
rescue
and support of offshore installations.
From the beginning, SEA VALIANT was therefore designed as considerably more than a conventional harbour tug.
120-Tonne Bollard Pull
The vessel's most important performance figure is her:
120-tonne bollard pull.
This figure is confirmed both by the original Polish design information and by MEGATUGS documentation following her acquisition.
Her towing capability is supported by substantial deck machinery including:
towing winch
stern roller
towing pins
and
shark jaws.
The original design specified a hydraulically driven towing winch rated at approximately 300 tonnes and a stern roller rated at approximately 400 tonnes.
Offshore Supply Capability
AIGAION PELAGOS can also function as a conventional offshore supply vessel.
Her large working deck provides approximately:
415–420 m²
of clear space.
Maximum deck cargo is approximately:
1,000 tonnes.
Tank capacities include substantial quantities of:
fuel oil
potable water
drill water
drilling mud
dry bulk
and recovered oil.
This allows her to support drilling rigs and offshore installations for extended operations.
Dynamic Positioning – DP2
The vessel is equipped with:
DP2 dynamic-positioning capability.
The system enables AIGAION PELAGOS to maintain a precise position using propulsion and thruster inputs rather than relying exclusively on anchors.
This is particularly important during:
offshore support
anchor handling
salvage
and emergency-response work close to another vessel or installation.
Firefighting and Salvage Capability
AIGAION PELAGOS is also classed for:
FiFi 1
and water-spray operations.
Her current Bureau Veritas notation includes functions associated with:
Anchor Handling Tug Supply
Salvage
Oil Recovery
Fire Fighting
Salvage Tug
and
DP2.
This combination makes the vessel particularly valuable in major casualty-response situations.
SEA VALIANT → VALIANT
The vessel spent the first decade of her life as SEA VALIANT.
In 2021, she was acquired by Greek company:
MEGATUGS Salvage & Towage.
Following the sale, her name was shortened to:
VALIANT.
MEGATUGS announced the acquisition as a major investment in Greece's salvage capability.
Arrival at Piraeus
VALIANT arrived at:
Piraeus on 5 May 2021
to begin drydocking, class surveys and preparation for her new Greek career.
The company announced that the vessel would ultimately be renamed:
AIGAION PELAGOS
and stationed in the Aegean with the principal mission of assisting ships in distress, protecting human life and limiting marine pollution.
At the time, MEGATUGS described her as the:
largest and most modern salvage tug in Greece.
Refit at Salamis and Piraeus
During 2021, VALIANT spent an extended period in the Piraeus ship-repair area.
She was documented at:
Perama
Ampelakia, Salamis
and the Vasileiadis drydock.
The vessel underwent the modifications and survey work necessary for her Greek registry and new operational role.
Renamed AIGAION PELAGOS
By March 2022, the vessel had formally become:
AIGAION PELAGOS.
The complete name history is therefore:
SEA VALIANT → VALIANT → AIGAION PELAGOS
She transferred to the:
Greek flag
with:
Piraeus
as port of registry.
Aegean Salvage Station
AIGAION PELAGOS was intended primarily as an emergency-response and salvage asset for the:
Aegean Sea.
Her 120-tonne bollard pull allows her to respond to casualties involving large merchant vessels whose size would exceed the capabilities of smaller harbour tugs.
Her equipment also allows the vessel to undertake:
emergency towing
firefighting
oil-spill response
salvage assistance
and offshore support.
Piraeus Connection
Few vessels in the PiraeuShips archive have a stronger relationship with Piraeus than AIGAION PELAGOS.
She arrived at Piraeus immediately following her acquisition by MEGATUGS, underwent her Greek conversion and surveys in the local repair zone and is registered at:
Piraeus.
PiraeuShips published its dedicated AIGAION PELAGOS – IMO 9477012 entry in April 2022, shortly after the vessel received her current identity.
Still Active in 2026
AIGAION PELAGOS remains fully active under the Greek flag in 2026.
Recent AIS records continue to show her operating from Piraeus and around the Aegean.
During September 2026 she was recorded sailing from Piraeus toward Mykonos, confirming her continued operational role sixteen years after construction.
PiraeuShips Record
AIGAION PELAGOS was recorded by PiraeuShips at the beginning of her Greek career following her acquisition by MEGATUGS Salvage & Towage. Built in Gdańsk, Poland, in 2010 as SEA VALIANT for GulfMark Offshore, the 70-metre DP2 Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessel was acquired by Greek interests in 2021, briefly renamed VALIANT and extensively prepared in the Piraeus–Salamis ship-repair area before becoming AIGAION PELAGOS. With a bollard pull of 120 tonnes, FiFi 1 capability, dynamic positioning and specialised salvage and oil-recovery equipment, she represents one of the most capable emergency-response vessels operating under the Greek flag. Still active in 2026 and based around Piraeus and the Aegean, the PiraeuShips footage documents the beginning of an important new chapter in the vessel's career.
