Aegean Orion - IMO 8865640 (now Ecodream)

AEGEAN ORION, today sailing as ECODREAM, is a small Greek bunkering tanker built in Türkiye in 1991. For many years she was a familiar working vessel around Piraeus, Drapetsona, Perama and Elefsis, operating in the local bunker and oil-products trade under Aegean interests. She was renamed AEGEAN ORION in 2008, after previously sailing as ORION, and retained that name until January 2022, when she became ECODREAM.

The tanker was built by Gamsar Shipyard in Istanbul. She measures 51.60 metres in length and 7.00 metres in beam, with a gross tonnage of 356 GT and deadweight of about 550–559 tonnes. The Greek Shipping Directory records a Skoda six-cylinder four-stroke main engine of about 550 bhp, while Bureau Veritas is listed as her class society.

History

The vessel was delivered in 1991 under a Turkish name recorded in databases as OZGE AKBASOGLU or OZGE AKBASOKLU. The exact year of her first renaming is inconsistent across historical sources, but she was definitely operating as ORION by the 2000s. Photographs document her as ORION in northern European waters in 2006–2007 under German management by BOT Bröring Oil Transport.

In May 2008, she became AEGEAN ORION and entered the Aegean bunker fleet. She initially appeared under the Liberian flag, but by 2009 had transferred to the Greek register, with Piraeus as home port. Aegean Marine Petroleum's SEC filings subsequently listed AEGEAN ORION as a 550-dwt special-purpose vessel in its bunker fleet.

Her name history is best shown as:

OZGE AKBASOGLU → ORION → AEGEAN ORION → ECODREAM

I would avoid giving an exact year for the OZGE AKBASOGLU → ORION change, because the historical databases disagree on whether it occurred in 1992 or 1994.

From AEGEAN ORION to ECODREAM

The vessel remained AEGEAN ORION until January 2022, when she was renamed ECODREAM. Importantly, she retained the same Greek identity:

IMO: 8865640
MMSI: 239550200
Call Sign: SVA2487
Flag: Greece
Home Port: Piraeus.

Photographs taken at Elefsis in March and June 2022 already show her carrying the new ECODREAM name.

Current Status – 2026

ECODREAM remains active in 2026. Recent AIS data records her operating between Piraeus and Elefsis, exactly the type of short-distance bunker and tanker work that has characterised her Greek career. Current tracking data still gives Greek flag, MMSI 239550200, call sign SVA2487, 51.6 m length and 356 GT.

Recent databases continue to associate the vessel with Aegean Shipping Enterprises. Ownership data is less consistent: some sources list Aegean Marine Orion M.C., while the Greek Shipping Directory historically listed Aegean Maistros Maritime Co. Because of that discrepancy, for PiraeuShips I would avoid presenting a single current registered owner as certain unless you have an updated Equasis/IHS entry.

Piraeus Connection

This is a vessel with a very strong Piraeus connection, not simply an occasional caller.

AEGEAN ORION was documented at Piraeus in May 2010, entering the port in November 2012, at Drapetsona Bay in May 2014, at Piraeus again in 2016 and 2017, undergoing annual maintenance at Perama in December 2018, and still at Piraeus in 2020 and 2021.

After becoming ECODREAM, she continued operating in the Piraeus–Elefsis area, so the connection survives to this day.

PiraeuShips Record

AEGEAN ORION was recorded at Piraeus by PiraeuShips during her long service in the local bunkering fleet. Built in Istanbul in 1991 and previously known as ORION, the vessel became closely associated with Aegean's Piraeus operations after her renaming in 2008. In January 2022 she was renamed ECODREAM, but she continues to operate under the Greek flag in the wider Piraeus and Elefsis area. The PiraeuShips recording therefore preserves the vessel during one of the longest and most recognisable identities of her career.
